The "Wickhausen Bachtal System" landscape conservation area near Wermelskirchen covers an area of 81,273 hectares.
The protected area was designated to preserve and develop the near-natural hillside forests with their undeveloped springs and spring meadows as habitats for flora and fauna typical of the area, as well as the distinctive biotope complex typical of the landscape. The stream meadows within a mixed deciduous forest are considered worthy of protection. The area is a near-natural spring area in the immediate catchment area of the Dhünn Dam. Groundwater soils particularly worthy of protection are found in the meadow valleys (see legaldocs.naturschutzinformationen.nrw.de/legaldocs/lpw_text.pdf (page 85).
