'Sixth Avenue', officially named 'Avenue of the Americas' since 1945, begins at Franklin Street in 'Lower Manhattan' and runs for approx. 6 km as one of the main shopping streets to 'Central Park South'.
Between the 1870s and 1938, the Sixth Avenue Elevated (El) elevated railway ran along the street. The railway was demolished in 1938 to make room for the new subway line under Sixth Avenue, which opened in 1940.
