The church building was built in the 15th century in Gothic style with a single-aisled straight-lined nave with a barrel vault. After the Reformation, the Protestants came to power in Zuid Beveland in 1578 and took possession of the village church. In 1801, the old village church was offered back for sale to Catholics, but due to disagreements over the purchase price, the purchase fell through. In 1859, the Catholics started building the Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, which was consecrated on November 23 that same year.
