Kursächsische Postmeilensäule as replica in front of the Schützenhaus (original typeface block and coat of arms of 1731 in the town hall)

During the reign of Augustus the Strong and his successor, the Electoral Postmile columns were erected on all important post and trade routes and in almost all cities of the Electorate of Saxony to indicate the official distances. This should provide the basis for a consistent calculation of postal charges. Since the Electorate of Saxony at that time was much larger than the present state of Saxony, such columns can also be found in Thuringia, Brandenburg, Saxony-Anhalt and in Poland (Wikipedia).

The city of Pulsnitz contains a monument worth seeing from the olden days. The same is on Wettin-Platze between the Schützenhaus and the Kgl. district courts. It is a postal column from the days of Augustus the Strong. It forms an obelisk made of sandstone, a four-sided column resting on a four-sided pedestal.

The column is about 5 m high and still in good condition. In addition to a list of place names with information on distances, it contains a picture of a post horn, the year 1731 and two Saxon-Polish coats of arms, each with a crown. The west side of the postal column contains various inscriptions. On the west side:

        From Pulsnitz to

        Bischofswerda 3 St.

        Budissin 7 St.

        Goerlitz 15 St.

        Wroclaw 45 hours

        Loebau 10 pcs.

        Zittau 14 St.

        Prague 28 hrs
