On either side of the Kleindiep there are two wooden benches in the shape of skates. They symbolize the turning point in Dokkum in the Eleven Cities Tour, which was last held in 1997. One skate indicates the direction the skaters come from, the other the direction they are going after they have reached the stamp.

Dokkum, the turning point of the Elfstedentocht. Curious if this will ever happen again!

Georgus Hermanus Josephus "George" Schweigmann (Sneek, 7 November 1924 – Leeuwarden, 18 October 2017) was a Dutch speed skater.
As a 17-year-old tour skater, Schweigmann skated eight consecutive Elfstedentochten from the eighth Elfstedentocht in 1942. He completed them all and is therefore joint record holder with (among others) Klaas de Groot. During the twelfth Elfstedentocht (1963), Schweigmann injured his knee by a skate from a fellow skater and finished last after the clench.
He was also a board member of the Royal Association De Friesche Elf Steden for 25 years. Schweigmann passed away in 2017.
He is a descendant of a family of textile traders (Lapkepoepen) from Germany (Recke near Mettingen) who settled in Friesland.
