Joachim Schäfer writes about this saint, known from the biblical accounts: "...according to which Lazarus, after his resurrection [Jesus's call to the man already buried in a rock tomb, "Lazarus, come out," is recorded in the Gospel of John 11:43] – at which he was 30 years old – settled in Kition – present-day Larnaca – in Cyprus and lived there for another 30 years. When Paul arrived in Cyprus with Barnabas, he met Lazarus and appointed him bishop; thus, he became the city's first bishop. In 890, a sarcophagus bearing the inscription "Lazarus, the friend of Christ" was discovered there; under Emperor Leo VI – who reigned from 886 to 912 – a church dedicated to Lazarus was built over the site, today the main church of Larnaca."
