Historical context:
The Poor Gate, which provides access to the monastic grounds of St. Bernard's Abbey, played an important role in the 18th century for the needy from the abbey's wider area. A chapel is connected to the gate, where the poor first attend Mass before receiving alms or bread. In the past, massive distributions of herring and bread to the poor were organized on Maundy Thursday and All Souls' Day. It also attracted large crowds during times of famine, such as in 1698.

The gate gives access to a path that first leads past dilapidated buildings to some companies and also brings pedestrians and cyclists onto the paths of the abbey park and on the Scheldt. According to an information board, the entrance gate was once the real entrance to the abbey (not the more recent entrance gate with the art, of course) and also functioned as a kind of Poor Man's Gate, although one is not entirely sure about this.
