In the heart of Nieuwstadt stands the Nieuwstadt Church, dedicated to John the Baptist. This monumental church has its origins in the Middle Ages and has been rebuilt several times over the years. The church, built of marl stone, is largely Romanesque with Gothic parts added later. In 1862 a comprehensive restoration took place under the direction of Pierre Cuypers. The construction of the church tower, which is so beautiful today, only began in 1930.

It is noteworthy that the choir of this church has a crooked floor plan. This is a striking deviation that is very present in Nieuwstadt. This deviation, occasionally observed in Europe, must be seen as a symbol of the crucified Christ. The dying savior is said to have hung his head on the cross facing south. For this reason, some choirs that deviate from the long axis of the church were placed to the south.
