The world clock is on Alexanderplatz and it was set up in 1969 in GDR times.
By reading the markings on the metal top, the current time in 148 major cities around the world can be determined.
A stone mosaic is embedded in the floor, which depicts a compass rose. A three-part cylinder is mounted on a 2.7 meter high column with a diameter of 1.5 meters. 24 corners is the base area, therefore also 24 sides. Each of the pages corresponds to one of the 24 time zones on earth.
Above the world clock, the solar system with planets is shown in a simplified form, seen as balls, which rotates per minute.
There is a myth among Berliners that if lovers hold hands under the world clock at midnight, they will stay together forever.

The world time clock on Alexanderplatz in Berlin's Mitte district (also: Urania world time clock) is a clock system in a structural unit with a symbolic representation of the world. On its metal rotunda it contains the names of 146 places and an additional entry for the date line. Since it was set up in 1969, the ten meter high world clock has been a popular meeting place for Berliners and tourists in the German capital. Since July 2015, the World Clock has been a listed building.

The world clock is by Erich John.
He was one of the leading industrial designers in the GDR and was a professor at the famous Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee. Its products have been sold in Australia, Sweden and Switzerland. Erich John designed cocktail shakers, vacuum cleaners, typewriters, car steering wheels (“Wartburg”) and a microscope that entire generations of students looked through in biology class. But his most famous work is in the middle of Berlin, on Alexanderplatz.
