In 1942 the hamlets of Vortum and Mullem were merged. Vortum meaning “settlement at a ford” and Mullem “village near the mill” have grown increasingly closer together. Once a year the village makes it to the national and regional media. The Boxmeerse Metworst Races take place here on Carnival Monday. Between the church village and the Maas are the so-called river dunes where badgers feel right at home. The IVN has set out a very interesting and easily accessible nature trail here.

Vortum-Mullem is a “twin village”. As the name suggests, the village consists of two centres, each with their own history. Mullem belonged to Sambeek and Vortum to Vierlingsbeek for centuries. The settlement of Vortum probably developed first. Mullem was located on the so-called Luinbeek or St. Jansbeek, which flowed past the Sambeek castle Hatendonck, better known as the Oude Waranda.
The mill also stood in Mullem for a long time, which moved to Vortum in the twentieth century. Because a number of farms were built on the connecting road between the two hamlets, Vortum and Mullem slowly grew closer. The villages developed mainly along the streams that flowed to the Meuse, which explains the elongated shape of the centers. It is now really one village with the church and school in the middle.
