A remarkable example of Pisan Gothic architecture, the small church of Santa Maria della Spina was built in 1230 on the banks of the Arno, near an important bridge, the Ponte Novo, which connected the streets of Santa Maria and Sant'Antonio. This bridge was destroyed in the 15th century and was never rebuilt.
