The main entrance to ancient Petra leads through the Siq, a narrow, 1.2-kilometer (745-mile) long gorge in the sandstone formation. The Wadi Musa riverbed once ran here; this can lead to seasonal flash floods in winter, both then and now. To mitigate this danger, the Nabataeans built a comprehensive water management system, which has been partially repaired in recent decades to minimize the risk of flash floods after heavy rains in the region.

In the final section of the gorge, 'Al-Khazneh' (The Treasury) becomes visible. This is Petra's most famous landmark.
