The main entrance to ancient Petra is through the Siq, a narrow, 1.2 km long gorge in the sandstone formation. The riverbed of Wadi Musa once ran here; this can lead to seasonal flash flooding in winter, then as now. To contain the danger, the Nabataeans built a comprehensive water management system, which has been partially restored in recent decades to minimize the risk of flash floods after heavy rain in the region.

In the last section of the gorge ‘Al-Khazneh’ (The Treasury) becomes visible. This is Petra's most famous attraction.
