In the Municipal Statutes of Spello, an entire chapter is dedicated to this defensive structure, whose custody was entrusted to the inhabitants of the tower located "among the carbonare".
Two men during the day and four at night, who were at least 18 years of age, armed and equipped with steel helmets, had to guard it to ensure continuous surveillance of the territory.
