Bevagna / Region – Umbria / Province – Perugia (PG)
Surrounded by city walls with towers and gates, the town has an intact medieval structure (12th-13th centuries). Numerous remains from the Roman period can still be seen in the upper part of the town: the remains of a temple, the theater, and a thermal bath, of which a frigidarium with a magnificent black-and-white floor mosaic depicting marine figures from the 2nd century AD has been preserved. The medieval urban structure, with squares and noble houses, developed above the layout of the Roman town: On the magnificent Piazza Silvestri are the Palazzo dei Consoli (1270), which houses the Torti Theater, the Romanesque churches of S. Silvestro and S. Michele Arcangelo, both from the late 12th century, and the Church of S. Domenico e Giacomo (1291). Worth seeing is the Palazzo Comunale (late 18th century), which houses the historical archives, the library, and the art gallery. The Baroque churches of the Monastery of St. Margherita and St. Filippo are also very interesting. At the highest point in the town is the Church of St. Francesco (late 13th century). Next to the altar, you can see the stone on which St. Francis knelt while preaching to the flock of birds at Pian d'Arca. The 18th-century Palazzo Lepri houses the Bevagna Museum, with works that tell the story of the town from pre-Roman times to the 18th century: archaeological finds from the ancient site of Mevania, medieval documents, and paintings by Dono Doni, Fantino, and Corrado Giaquinto. In the surrounding hills, the Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie (late 16th century), the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Valle, and the Monastery of the Annunziata (11th century), formerly a defensive castle, stand out.

Wandering the narrow streets of Bevagna is like traveling back in time. The fortified historic center is an open-air museum to admire the characteristic architectural styles of central Italy: Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque. The charm of the citadel is enriched by the presence of the turquoise waters of the river Timia (or Clitunno) which almost make it look like an island. At the end of June, the citadel takes a leap in time with the medieval festival of the Mercato delle Gaite, a truly unique experience.

Bevagna is a small village where time seems to have stopped. Those who visit it have the opportunity to immerse themselves in a medieval atmosphere and admire its walls, which are well preserved today. Among the six access gates, the southern one stands out, overlooking the bridge over the Clitunno River.
