Cannara is a small village located in the heart of the Umbrian plain, on the banks of the Topino river. From here you can admire the slopes of Mount Subasio to the east, with Assisi on one side and Spello on the other. To the west you can see the top of Monte Le Cinque Querce. Cannara owes its name to the reeds that once grew in the swampy areas of the Topino.

Cannara boasts ancient origins. Founded with the name of  Castrum Canarli, it historically appears in the early thirteenth century but its origins are to be identified with the ancient center of the Umbrians, called by the Romans  Urvinum Hortense, already existing in the 1st century. BC. Personally I find the historic center less attractive than that of nearby Bevagna or Spello; it is however a typical village of the Umbrian Valley.
Cannara is also known for the PGI red onion and for the festival connected to it.
