The current Church of the Santa Casa da Misericordia de Viana do Castelo dates back to the 18th century. Located in the heart of the city, next to Republic Square, it is one of the main attractions for both locals and visitors due to the uniqueness and artistic richness housed within.

The old Church of the Brotherhood of Mercy is known to have been in such a state of disrepair in 1714 that the city council felt compelled to decide on its partial or total demolition.
