The Postgalerie Speyer is a shopping center that was built in 2012 into the listed former building of the General Post Office from 1901.
From 1816 to de facto 1940, de jure 1943, the Palatinate was part of Bavaria as the eighth Bavarian district. The Bavarian government lavishly equipped its new capital of the Palatinate with representative buildings that still shape the face of the city today, such as almost all of the buildings on the Domplatz.
The General Post Office, built in 1900-1901, cost almost 1 million gold marks and was one of the most important buildings within this construction program for the newly acquired territory of the Palatinate for Bavaria.
According to the files, the planner of the building was Anton Geyer, building officer at the Land Planning Office. Construction was managed by building inspector Otto Baer. The building authority and its architects aimed to incorporate architectural elements from the history of construction in their buildings, a style known as historicism that was prevalent at the time.

The listed former Reichs-Post building was converted into the "Postgalerie Speyer" shopping center. A new core was inserted into the U-shaped existing building while preserving the existing structure as much as possible. Leaning against the historic "Altpörtel" tower, it forms the beginning of Speyer's pedestrian zone.

Up to 40 shops, cafés, bistros, restaurants, service areas and ancillary areas with a total area of 23,000 m² can be found in the old and new buildings.
