The Grossbottwar Gate with its gatehouse was part of the town's fortifications and was also the official residence of the gatekeeper. Since many people had misjudged the clearance height, red and white poles were installed.

The so-called Großbottwar Gate, known as the "Upper Gate" until the late 19th century, is the last remaining city gate in the municipality of Mundelsheim and is considered a landmark of the town. It is assumed that the massive brick substructure of the gate was built around 1428. The year 1539 is believed to be the year in which the half-timbered upper floor and roof truss were built.
