Sedan monument at the Protestant city church of St. Andreas

The ceremonial inauguration of the Sedan monument took place on Sedan Day in 1895, September 2nd. With lively participation from the population, the Selber dignitaries inaugurated a memorial designed as an obelisk for the 13 fallen soldiers of the French campaign of 1870-1871 in a forecourt of the Selber town church. The name Sedantag goes back to the battle on September 2, 1870, when the French troops were decisively defeated near Sedan in the Franco-German War. That day four of the 13 Selber fell at Sedan. Despite the German victory, the war did not officially end until May 10, 1871 (Peace of Frankfurt). The Sedand monument, like the entire square, is also a listed building as a former fortified churchyard (D-4-79-152-134).
