The Salzwedeler Dumme flows peacefully through the small town of Salzwedel. At this point, everything seems very idyllic, with the church as a backdrop, very well designed, and you can take a leisurely look around. The Salzwedeler Dumme is a left or western tributary of the Jeetze, also called the Jeetzel. The river name "Dumme," first mentioned in 1343 as "de dummen," is of Germanic origin. The name may derive from the Old Low German dumba, "dust (cloud)" or dumma, "fog cover." However, the most likely derivation is from the Old Low German dumb, or Old High German tumb, "silent." The name thus refers to the slow flow of the water.de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salzwedeler_Dumme
