    How it all began...The Harle was very important for freight transport and as a waterway to the coastal ports from a very early stage. A tributary made it possible to drive as far as the current market square in Wittmund.

    In order to also accommodate passenger traffic, the Carolinensieler mayor P.J. Fimmen and the grain trader W. Feßner founded the joint-stock company "Carolinensieler-Wittmunder-Dampfschifffahrts-Gesellschaft" in 1853. The 80 shares, each worth 30 Reichstaler gold, were quickly placed.
