A popular destination for a day trip is the Rursee area. It stretches from Einruhr - where the Rur flows from Belgium via Monschau into the Obersee - to Rurberg. The Obersee is a drinking water protection area, and in Rurberg it flows into the larger Rursee. Boats travel on both, and I can fully recommend a combined hike with a final return by boat to the starting point.
