Cosmic rays consist of high-energy particles such as protons, helium nuclei and electrons. Radiation exposure varies depending on location on Earth and is more intense at higher latitudes. The Earth is protected from cosmic radiation by the Earth's magnetic field, which deflects charged particles, and by the atmosphere. Cosmic radiation on the earth's surface is therefore very low, and our bodies have adapted to this natural background radiation over the course of evolution. The natural radiation dose at sea level is only about 0.3 millisieverts per year, which is considered low. This shows that our environment offers a low level of radiation to which the human organism is adapted. However, the further we get from Earth's surface, the more energetic particles from space can cause serious harm, especially to astronauts.
