The parish was first mentioned in writing in 1157, when Pope Adrian IV transferred the tithe right to the Chapter of Our Lady in Maastricht. In 1366 the church was destroyed by fire. In 1467, in addition to the tithe right, the right of patronage was also added to the Chapter of Our Lady.
The oldest parts of the current church probably date from the 16th century, with the choir being the oldest and the northern transept arm slightly younger. In 1679 a fire broke out. After restoration, the side aisles were demolished in 1769-1770 and rebuilt in classicist style. From 1846 to 1852 the Romanesque nave, the Gothic tower and the side aisles were demolished. Tower and nave were rebuilt in neo-Gothic style. The southern transept arm was also demolished and rebuilt. The north chapel and north transept arm were retained.
The church was heavily damaged by war in 1940 and rebuilt during the Second World War. The building was protected as a monument in 1983, and restored in 1993-1994.
