Gasterbos Castle is a castle-like building south of Schulen, located at Gasterbosstraat 1.
The castle was built in 1889-1890 according to a design by the Ghent architect Auguste Van Assche in Maasland neo-Renaissance style. The castle farm was designed in 1902 by the architects Henri (1850-1919) and Valentin Vaerwyck. The domain therefore includes the actual castle and a castle farm.
To replace the previous castle, owner Hubert Van Willigen commissioned the construction of the current castle as a completely new building. The old castle was then demolished. The only daughter Van Willigen inherited the Gasterbos estate and so it passed into the hands of her descendants for several generations: the de Moffarts family. At the beginning of the 21st century, the de Moffarts family sold the property in two parts: the castle and grounds went to the Lenaers family and the castle farm was sold to the Pieck family.
The castle park was constructed at the time according to the plans of landscape architect Galoppin. The current owner has restored the castle and gardens to their former glory.
The castle is a rectangular brick structure, with a rubble stone plinth and several stepped gables. The castle farm, a closed farm in the same style, dates from 1902.
