Gießelhorster Bäke

The Gießelhorster Bäke flows through the town of Westerstede and the village of Ocholt. If it rains, there is a risk of flooding of parts of the village of Ocholt. In order to be able to avoid this in the future, a river development plan was drawn up in which, in addition to water ecological objectives, this problem was given special consideration.The water development plan covers the entire course of the Gießelhorster Bäke, including the water flow in Gießelhorst as the main tributary. The riverbed and the surrounding lowlands were examined. It was examined in which places the Bäke identified problematic structures and where and how these could be improved. In particular, the aspect of flooding was examined by looking for retention areas and finding areas that could reduce the risk of flooding in Ocholt during flood events.
