The city's third water tower is located on Mercatorlaan in Ostend. The water tower was erected in 1900, on the same site as the second water tower, which had collapsed a year earlier. The imposing structure was 49.8m high and could hold a water capacity of 700m³. However, the quality of the water was below par. In 1905, a solution was found in collaboration with the Brussels Compagnie Intercommunale des Eaux, or C.I.E. for short, which would supply the city with drinking water from the Bocq-Hoyoux. However, it would not be until 1923 that the first 'Bocq water' flowed from the tap in Ostend. Due to the construction of a new water tower, the tower on Mercatorlaan became a monument in the early 1960s. The city council had plans to demolish the old water tower, but in 1977 the tower was protected as a monument.
