During the Second World War, the Royal Air Force (RAF) planned to destroy the German dams as early as 1937 in order to impair the water supply and power supply in the Ruhr area. Barnes Wallis developed special rolling bombs for this purpose. Operation Chastise was launched in 1943 to attack the Möhne, Sorpe and Eder dams. The no. 617 Squadron ("Dambusters") carried out the attack with Avro Lancaster bombers. Despite losses, it was possible to destroy the Möhne Dam and cause significant damage to the Ederstal Dam, which affected the armaments industry in the Ruhr area.

This high water mark made of local Ruhr sandstone was located on the outside of the former administration building of the Stahlwerke Brüninghaus company until 2008. It showed the water level at that time during the flood after the bombing of the Möhne Dam.
