In the 18th century, Friedrich Heinrich, the last Margrave of Schwedt, had an operetta theatre built in the orangery of the Margrave's castle in Schwedt, which was well known far beyond the borders. With the development of Schwedt into an industrial city, the theatre tradition in the city was revived at the end of the 1970s. In 1978, the Schwedt Cultural Centre was built on the site of the castle, which had been damaged in the war and blown up in 1962, based on designs by the Czech architects Josef and Benes Konvalina. A year later, the theatre ensemble, which had previously been based in Prenzlau, moved into the neighbouring Intime Theatre as the theatre of the city of Schwedt. In 1990, the cultural centre and theatre merged in a previously unique constellation to form the Uckermärkische Bühnen Schwedt. In 2022, the building was listed as a historic monument, which means that the planned general renovation has been postponed.

It is an open-air stage with over 700 seats and is used from May to September for the Oder Valley Festival, which takes place under the motto "Summer on the River." The stage is located in the European Huguenot Park, a former palace garden designed in the 17th century based on the French Baroque garden model.
