Haydau's traditional gardens date back to the time when the monastery was converted into a landgrave's hunting and summer palace. The transformation began under the Hessian Landgrave Moritz in the years 1606 to 1619 and was continued by Landgrave Karl 1696 to 1699. The gardens were divided into different areas: courtyard, pleasure garden and tree gardens.
