The First World War was disastrous for Buggenhout forest. No less than 250 ha were cut down from the 400 ha forest! This is therefore more than the current size of Buggenhoutbos, including the planned forest expansion. For example, the forests along the Ravenstraat disappeared. The felled trees of good quality served, among other things, as construction material at the front. The Germans made charcoal for the powder factories on site from the small and less suitable specimens. There was a shortage of fuel for the German occupiers. Charcoal was processed into gunpowder. The cleared area was then taken up by agriculture and residential areas in new streets such as Bosdreef and Kalkenstraat.
