If you want beautiful pictures of the Helsinki panorama without reflections from the glass panes, then it's recommended to go up the Olympic Tower. There are only metal struts there, but no distracting glass panes to obstruct the view.

Helsinki is the smallest city ever to have the privilege of hosting the Summer Olympic Games.

Helsinki was originally slated to host the 1940 Summer Olympics after Japan relinquished them in 1937. In the initial bidding process, Helsinki ranked second only to Japan. Finland's capital began preparing for the Games and the arrival of athletes and visitors from around the world. Construction began on sports arenas and service facilities, including hotels and ferry terminals. Hosting the Olympics was seen as an opportunity for urban development, but unfortunately, the Games had to be canceled in the spring of 1940 due to the outbreak of World War II.

After London hosted the Summer Games in 1948, they finally came to Helsinki in 1952. The Olympic buildings, constructed in the 1930s, were now finally used for their original purpose, although the stands at some venues had to be extended.

Apart from the 1952 Olympics, the stadium has hosted a number of other major competitions, including the first ever World Championships in Athletics in 1983, and the same competition again in 2005. Finnish National Football team uses the stadium for most of its home matches.

In addition to sports, several biggest names in music have held concerts at the stadium.

Olympiastadion houses the Finnish National Sports Museum, exhibiting how successful Finland has been in various sports, despite being such a small country by population.
