As Mellbreak stands apart from the other Loweswater fells, from a distance its appearance reminds me of a sleeping dinosaur. You can just imagine it rising up from its slumber beside Crummock Water! There are two main summits to Mellbreak and the southerly peak is the Wainwright top. The most exciting way up Mellbreak is from the north up the tongue of scree and following a trail through heather to reach the north top first.

Alfred Wainwright wrote that ‘there is only one Mellbreak’ - and he couldn't be more right! Mellbreak stands alone above Crummock Water and has a unique shape and location. At 1,680 feet (512 m), it is a tough hill to climb, requiring a concerted effort.

Marvelous Mellbreak. I hiked this as a group of five Wainwrights (Burnbank Fell 475m, Blake Fell 573m, Gavel Fell 526m, Hen Comb 509m and Mellbreak 512m). It was a loop from Stuart Marshal's Wainwright book (Route No 34). World class picture postcard views all round but Mellbreak was the best but I am glad I did it last from the South thus coming down White Crag.
