Kasteel Hof ter Brugge dates from the seventeenth century and is probably the most famous protected immovable heritage in Erps-Kwerps. It all started with a medieval lock. The castle is a moated castle, although part of it has been filled in. The Weesbeek runs through the domain. That stream has largely determined the structure of the village because the oldest roads often run parallel to it. The castle, which is located on the football square, is probably not unknown to comic book enthusiasts. Marc Sleen (RIP) used the castle under the name "Rattenkasteel" as it is also called in Erps-Kwerps (or was called when I still lived there) in his fourth comic in the Nero series. Sleen once called it his favorite strip. It was pre-published in 1948 in De Nieuwe Gids and contains quite a bit of criticism of and references to that post-war period, to the Erps-Kwerps region and to Leuven, where part of it is set. The strip appeared as an album in 1953. On my last visit it seemed as if several families live on the domain today. The main entrance is located on the Oude Baan, behind the chapel with the coat of arms of the de Plaines family, who lived in the castle for a while, more specifically from 1505 to 1842. For a time, this family held the title of "lord of Quarebbe". Quarebbe means 'bad piece of land' and is the basis of the name Kwerps. The old entrance gate shows a so-called alliance coat of arms of the de Plaines-Rombouts family. On the gatehouse is the year 1643 (not visible from the outside). The adjoining wing with service areas and caretaker's house, built in sandstone, is dated 1640. Opposite the castle is the carriage house.
