The main cemetery Altona was planned in 1916 by the then gardening director Ferdinand Tutenberg. The first funerals took place in 1923 after several years of construction. Today, the main cemetery Altona covers a total area of 63 ha.
In addition to the pure occupation areas, which have the character of a "lawn cemetery", further generous open spaces and the beautiful trees enhance the impression of a park-like complex. Especially the Japanese ornamental cherry avenue is worth a visit in full bloom.
