At the foot of Namafjall lies Hverir, one of the largest solfat tar fields in the country. Boiling gray mud, yellow sulphurous shine, red glow of oxidized earth... amidst white fumaroles, the pulsations of the earth present an unreal spectacle. In mud pits, soil and stone are dissolved by acidic water into a bubbling mixture. A little further on, emissions of steam full of hydrogen sulfide (that typical rotten egg smell) are converted into sulfur deposits after contact with oxygen. This sulfur was used for the production of gunpowder.

East of Myvatn lies this active geothermal area. For currently 1200 ISK you can conveniently park next door and admire the beauties of the hot pools, fumeroles, pools and sulfur smokers. In addition, one is still supplied with hydrogen sulphide. What more do you want. Definitely bring time.

You have to get used to the "interesting" smell.

This geothermal area is one of the most extraordinary natural phenomena in Iceland. The colors, the smell of sulfur and the steam will stay in your memory. Everything here is very lively, it bubbles and hisses, so please stay on the designated paths.
Unique impressions that you have to see.
