Around 1900, the Munich town architect Hans Grässel invented the concept of the Waldfriedhof: the integration of a cemetery into an existing forest. The Munich Forest Cemetery is the first of its kind and with 160 ha one of the largest.
In the 1960s, he received an extension that is a bit more open and landscaped.

One of the largest war cemeteries in Germany is also located in the forest cemetery. 3,543 victims from 18 nations of the two world wars are buried here. A separate part of the forest cemetery is the Cimitero Militare Italiano, where 3,238 Italian soldiers found their final resting place. Next to the new funeral hall marked here in the new southern part of the cemetery, there is a beautiful pond with two islands, which form a thankful retreat for the numerous ducks and geese.

It's amazing how extensive this cemetery is. Many historical graves.
