After several severe storm surges, most recently on January 28, 1901, the city council of Weener with a petition for the granting of funds for the construction of a protective lock. It should keep emwater stalls that are more than two meters above sea level away from the city. The draft was commissioned in April 1902 by the Magistrate and completed in late 1902.
