History of the vessel: Since 1864, lightships have been used off the coast to indicate certain Flemish banks for maritime traffic with their beacons. Lightships 1, 2, and 3 of the third generation were built in Ostend near Béliard-Crighton in 1950. They were deployed in rotation to indicate the Wandelaar and the West-Hinder with their beacons. They were also used as observation vessels. The third vessel was kept in the harbor as a reserve. This time in the harbor was used for maintenance. The vessels had a crew of nine.
