To the north, the Egloffsteiner Tor, one of the three surviving gates of the medieval city fortifications, closes off the market square. Older names of the gate are known as Schütttor, Wethtor or Schwemmtor (the horse pond was in front of the gate). Through this gate one entered the north-eastern suburb.

In 1708 the gate was bought by the town from the rural administration. It has been privately owned since 1810.
