At 82 metres high, the Bissara Tower in Piazza dei Signori in Vicenza is one of the city’s most beloved symbols and a historical reminder of the city’s events over the centuries.
It was the year 1174 when the powerful Bissari family decided to build their own tower next to the family palace. A few years later, in 1226, the tower and the palace were purchased by the Municipality of Vicenza and became public property. In the 14th century, the city’s first mechanical clock was installed on the tower, whose dial was changed many times over the centuries. From the very beginning, the tower was loved by the people of Vicenza and travellers passing through the city, and praised for its remarkable height.
