In the place of the Wittelsbach Castle stood the Castle of Kelheim, which was first mentioned in 1050 in the possession of the Wittelsbach family. According to tradition, the future Duke Ludwig, the Kelheimer, was born here in 1174. Kelheim was the center of his rule. After his murder, the Wittelsbachers moved the residence to Landshut. In 1476 the old castle was demolished. The two round towers and the Herzogkasten were built from this material. Inside, the mighty ashlar stones, remains of the keep, can still be seen.
