The work Eternity-Poseidon, Pigeons is a literal clash between two cultures. We see a classical bronze statue, Poseidon, on which birds are resting. However, if you look a little more carefully, you will discover that these are no ordinary pigeons, but lacquered Peking ducks. With this ironic wink, the artist plays with (mutual) prejudices and stereotypes of East and West.

Xu Zhen based the artwork on the bronze statue of Artemision, a statue from 460 BC. which was found in a Roman shipwreck at the bottom of the sea, near the Cape of Artemision, off the Greek coast. To date, it is unclear whether the statue represents Poseidon, the god of the sea, or Zeus, the god of the sky.

Eternity-Poseidon, Pigeons is part of The Eternity Series, a collection of sculptures that blend Eastern and Western historical artifacts.

Dating back to pre-Christian times, the deities of Roman and Greek mythology, in particular, have survived in the collective memory of Europeans to this day. Throughout history, they have been repeatedly depicted by artists as motifs in paintings or—as here on the Belgian coast, far from their homeland—as statues. On this hiking highlight, we encounter a sculpture of the Greek god Zeus, who rules over Mount Olympus—not just a high mountain in Greece, but above all, the legendary seat of the gods in ancient mythology.
