The Lower Water Tower in Nördlingen is a significant part of the city's fortifications and was built in the 15th century. It is located at the point where the Eger, a small river, leaves the city. This spot was considered a weak point in the defenses, which is why the tower was built specifically to protect the Eger culvert.

Chronicle sources indicate that the tower was built in 1448/1449. According to the city chamber's accounts, after a lightning strike in 1665, it was demolished in 1675 and rebuilt in its current form.
