The tower was built in 1898 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the reign of Emperor Franz Josef I. It was built by city architect Anton Kainrath in the sense of the late Gründerzeit castle romantic as a battlements, 21 m high lookout tower. The cost of the new building amounted to 12,000 guilders, mostly raised by donations. The ceremonial opening of the building took place on July 10, 1898.
