The preserved buildings of the former Fort Hauptstein are now located on Johann-Maria-Kertell-Platz, slightly above the Taubertsbergbad and can be easily reached from the main station via Wallstrasse. From the fortification phase from 1713, the basement of the Kehl reduit has been preserved, with the upper floor built of stone from 1842, as well as from a later fortification phase from 1873 the cavalier main stone. The two buildings house the premises of five different clubs, so that they are entirely subject to current use. For a long time, the growing trees on the roof dominated the appearance of the Kehleduit, while the earth fill on the roof of the cavalier has not existed since the 1970s. The buildings have been being repaired since 2021 and should soon make a dignified appearance again in the cityscape. The ensemble is well maintained and currently no longer threatened with decay.
A public inspection of the buildings is not possible, guided tours are not offered. The cavalier's front is open to the public; the throat reduit is fenced in and partially visible from the street. The rear of the two buildings can be partially viewed from the sunbathing lawn of the adjacent outdoor pool.

The two structures on the main stone allow three different expansion and reconstruction phases of the fortress to be seen and thus represent a unique ensemble of the Mainz fortress landscape, which bears witness to a fortress history spanning over 300 years.
