According to legend, the church was named after a certain Catherine, who donated money for the construction of the church, was then slandered and sentenced to death on the torture wheel and was later canonized. In her memory, there is a medallion above the side entrance to the church, with her image wearing a martyr's crown, holding the torture wheel and a sword. Motifs from this legend can also be seen in the coat of arms of the city of Kuldiga.
