The former Catholic rectory of St. Mariä Himmelfahrt (locally known as the Altes Pastorat) is located at Eygelshovener Straße 17 in Herzogenrath. It is one of the oldest and historically most layered buildings in the city. The building stands partly on the foundations of the medieval city fortifications of Herzogenrath, specifically near the old Eygelshoven gate (city gate) and the city wall. When Abbot Johannes Wormbs of the nearby Rolduc Abbey (Klosterrath) founded the parish in 1564, accommodation had to be provided for the priest. It was decided to integrate this into the existing gate structure.
