The city, which is the capital of the Garfagnana, dates back to the High Middle Ages: it was is mentioned for the first time about the domination of the Longobards, people of Germanic origin. The main square is dominated by the Rocca Ariostesca, a fortress that takes its name from a famous Italian Renaissance poet, Ludovico Ariosto, who ruled the Garfagnana from 1522 to 1525.
The first weekend of each month takes place the Farmer's Market, where you can taste delicious local specialties from various types of cheeses and cured meat, hams, sausages, to other products of the Garfagnana tradition: mushrooms, chestnuts, spelt, game ...

Castelnuovo di Garfagnana - Tea Time

Sunday, the locals in the new castle are also enjoying the peace. The apostles Peter and Paul invite us into the shade of their modest prayer house (Parrocchia Abbaziale dei SS.
