The most magnificent road through Exmoor. Quiet, foggy and rainy at times, steep out of Lynnouth, this is simply too gorgeous to leave out.

Top 100 Climbs 6 Exmoor Forest

The town of Lynmouth lies at the base of three stiff climbs - the very tough Countisbury Hill, the shorter and steeper Lynton Hill, and finally the long road heading up onto Exmoor. It;s this route from sea level to the top of Hoar Tor that provides the most climbing. A tiny kick out of town soon eases into a steady gradient as the road follows the river through the valley. Past a car park, you reach the left turn for the B3223 and cross the bridge onto the harder inclines. You wouldn't expect to reach the top of Exmoor without some serious toil and this middle stretch gives you just that. Keep pushing and you'll reach a couple of hairpin bends - first left, then back on yourself, then right - which deliver you onto the gentler higher slopes. Now above the trees, the well surfaced but rough - topped road, populated by sheep, grinds on and on, finally petering out just before Blackpitts Gate.
